Central Java is one of the provinces in Indonesia whose capital is in Semarang and is located on the island of Java. Administratively has 6 cities, 29 districts, 545 subdistricts and 8,490 villages. It has an area of 32,548 km ² or approximately 28.94% of the total area of Java Island. The anniversary of Central Java is on August 15, 1950. Nusakambangan Island in the south and Karimun Island Java also includes Central Java Province.
A brief History
Since the time of the Dutch East Indies, Central Java was formed as a province. And in 1905, Central Java consisted of 5 regions or “gewesten” namely Semarang, Kedu, Pekalongan, Pati, Banyumas. At that time Pati Region also covers Regentschap Bojonegoro and Tuban. Surakarta stands alone as the royal swapraja or vorstenland region and consists of two areas namely Surakarta and Mangkunegaran Sunanate.
At the time of Indonesia’s independence in 1945, the Government formed Mangkunegaran and Kasunanan become residency. In 1950 through the Act established the formation of municipalities and districts in Central Java covering 6 municipalities and 29 districts. August 15, 1950 as the day when the Act is set to date is commemorated as the Anniversary of Central Java Province.
Central Java has quite a number of prominent universities, especially in Surakarta and Semarang. State universities include: Diponegoro University (Undip), Polytechnic of Health Ministry of Health Semarang (Poltekkes), State Polytechnic of Semarang (Polines), State University of Semarang (Unnes) and State Islamic University of UIN Walisongo in Semarang, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta (UNS), Institut State Islamic Religion (Stain) Salatiga, Tidar University in Magelang, Indonesian Institute of Art in Surakarta, and General Soedirman University (Unsoed) in Purwokerto.
