Kempul gamelan

Kempul is one of the gamelan instruments that were beaten, which were generally hung into 1 (one) device with Gong. Kempul is included in the group of hard instruments from the gamelan. Gamelan is a traditional Javanese musical instrument made of tin and copper. Gamelan has 2 types of instruments namely hard instruments and soft instruments. Musical instruments including hard instruments besides kempul include bonang barung, bonang successors, kethuk, kenong, gong, kempyang, saron, demung, and saron peking. While soft instruments include fiddle, gambang, gender barung, gender successor, slenthem, flute, siter and kendhang.

Kempul has a shape similar to a gong but smaller in size. Kempul marks important accents in song sentences or gendhing. In conjunction with songs or gendhing, kempul can play the same tone with balungan tones and sometimes the kempul precedes the next balungan tone. Kempul raises a sound that is higher than Gong, while the smaller one will create a higher sound. The Kempul in the Javanese gamelan consists of 9 to 11 kempul. The tone of Kempul is divided into 2: Slendro-pitched kempul & Pelog pitched kempul.
