Mount Merbabu is a volcano that has a Strato type which is geographically located at 7.5 ° South Latitude and 110.4 ° East Longitude. Administratively, Mount Merbabu is in the Boyolali Regency on the southern and eastern slopes, Magelang Regency on the western slope, Semarang Regency on the northern slope, Central Java.
Through texts in pre-Islamic times, Mount Merbabu was known as Mount Pam (a) rihan or Mount Damalung. Whereas according to etymology, “merbabu” is a name derived from a combination of words between “meru” which means mountain and “ash” which means ash.
Mount Merbabu erupted in 1560 and 1797. The mountain peak of Merbabu is located at an altitude of 3,145 masl. Mount Merbabu has Dipterocarp Hill Forest, Montane Forest, Upper Dipterocarp Forest, and Ericaceous forest or mountain forest.
Mount Merbabu is very popular for climbing activities. With terrain that is not too heavy / difficult but still has to pay attention to the potential danger to climbers namely thick fog, cold air, dense but homogeneous forests, and the absence of water sources.
There are several hiking trails on Mount Merbabu which include the Tekelan Climbing Line, Kopeng, Salatiga; Selo Ascent Line, Boyolali; Climbing Route Wekas, Magelang; Suwanting Ascent Line, Magelang; Chuntel Ascent Line, Magelang
Of the five lanes, the climbing lane from Selo Subdistrict is a favorite climbing lane for most climbers, because the lane is not too difficult and will be spoiled with very beautiful scenery, Selo is a sub-district in Boyolali Regency, while Basecamp Selo is in Genting village, Cello.
Estimated Duration of Travel for those who choose to use the Selo lane, from Basecamp to Post 1, takes 2.5 hours; from Post 1 to Post 2 it takes 30 minutes; from Post 2 to Post 3 it takes 1 hour; from Post 3 to Sabana 1 takes 2 hours; from Sabana 1 to Sabana 2 it takes 1 hour; from Sabana 2 to Kenteng Songo Peak takes 2 hours. So Total Travel takes around 9 hours to walk casually.
