Karimunjawa is an archipelago located in the Java Sea and included in Jepara Regency, Central Java. Having a land area of ​​around 1,500 ha and waters of around 110,000 ha, Karimunjawa Islands are now being developed into the tourist charm of the Marine Park which has begun to be favored by many local and foreign tourists.

Karimunjawa Island is found by Sunan Muria, referring to the legend circulating in the Karimunjawa Islands. The legend tells the story of Sunan Muria who is concerned about the mischief of his son Amir Hasan. Intending to educate him, Sunan Muria ordered Amir Hasan to go to an island that appeared to be “kremun-kremun” or run away from the summit of Mount Muria so that Amir Hasan could deepen and develop his religious knowledge. Because it appears “kremun-kremun” that is the island is called Karimun Island.

Ecosystem

Karimunjawa Islands have been designated by the Jepara government as a National Park since March 15, 2001. Karimunjawa Island is home to coastal forests, coral reefs, mangrove forests, and about 400 species of marine fauna and among them 242 species of ornamental fish. Some of the rare fauna that inhabit here include hawksbill turtles, white sea eagle and green turtles. Dewadaru (Crystocalyx macrophyla) found in lowland rainforests is a plant that is a characteristic or icon of Karimunjawa National Park. The waves on Karimunjawa are low and tame and are limited by the beach, which is mostly a fine white sand beach.

Geographical

Karimunjawa Islands have 27 islands between divided in inhabited islands and uninhabited islands:
The inhabited island: Karimunjawa, Kemujan, Mosquitoes, Parang and Genting
Uninhabited islands: Big Spruce, Small Spruce, Big Ditch, Small Ditch, Bald, Seruni, Mining, Scholars, Geleyang (30 ha), Birds, Bengkoang (92 ha), Twins (11.2 ha), Sintok, Mrican , Middle, Side, Katang (2.8 ha), Krakal Besar (2.8 ha), Krakal Kecil (2.8 ha), Little (2 ha), Kumbang (8.8 ha) and Mencawakan (or Menyawakan Island). )

Population

Karimunjawa Islands have a population of more than 10100,000 people on 5 inhabited islands. The three main tribes that inhabit Karimunjawa Islands are Javanese farming and producing household utensils, the Bugis are reliable seafarers who work as fishermen, and the Madurese also work as fishermen but have the advantage of making dried fish.

Education in Karimunjawa has reached high school level. Karimunjawa Islands have around 10 elementary schools, one junior high school, Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs), and State Vocational School majoring in Seaweed Cultivation and Fisheries Products Processing Technology and are free schools, and one Madrasah Aliyah.
