The Origin of Indonesian Names

Visit Klaten – The Origin of Indonesian Names and Their Inventors. What is meant by Indonesia is Indonesia in the geographical and national sense.

According to geographical understanding, Indonesia means the part of the earth that stretches from 95°-141° East Longitude, and 6° North Latitude to 11° South Latitude. Meanwhile, Indonesia means a nation that is economically, politically and socio-culturally within the region.

In 1850, the term Indonesian was first discovered by a British ethnologist named James Richardson Logan in earth sciences. The term Indonesia was also used by G.W Earl in the field of ethnology. G.W. Earl called Indonesians and Melayunesians the inhabitants of the Malay Archipelago.

In 1862 the term Indonesia was used by an Englishman named Maxwell in his essay entitled The Island of Indonesia (Indonesian Islands) in relation to earth science. The term Indonesia became increasingly popular when a German ethnologist named Adolf Bastian used the term Indonesia in 1884 in connection with ethnology.

The word Indonesia comes from the Latin word indus which means Indies and the Greek word nesos which means island, nesioi (plural) means islands. Thus, the word Indonesia means the Indian islands.

Indonesia is also known as the Archipelago. The word Nusantara comes from Old Javanese, namely ‘nusa’ which means island and ‘antara’ which means relationship. So, Nusantara means a series of islands.

The Indonesian people first used the name Indonesia politically. The term Indonesia was first used by the Indonesian Association, an organization founded by Indonesian students in the Netherlands in 1908. The organization was first called Indische Vereeniging. Then the name was changed to Indonesische Vereeniging in 1922. In 1922 the name was also changed to Perhimpunan Indonesia.

In 1928 the Second Youth Congress in Jakarta used the term Indonesia in relation to national unity. The Second Youth Congress on October 28 1928 produced the Youth Pledge which included the name Indonesia. The term Indonesia was officially used as the name of our country on August 17 1945 with the proclamation of Indonesian independence.
