slenthem dan gender

On this occasion visitklaten.com will discuss again about gamelan devices that hopefully can add insight into Javanese culture that has begun to gradually disappear

Slenthem

Slenthem is one of the gamelan instruments and consists of wide thin metal sheets strung and stretched over the tubes & produces a low hum or echo that follows saron, ricik & balungan tones when beaten. Some people call it gender inflating. Slenthem also has a slendro version & a pelog version. Wilent Slenthem Pelog usually has a range of C to B, while Wilahan slenthem slendro usually has a tone range C, D, E, G, A, C ‘.

How to play slenthem is the same as playing Balungan, Ricik, and Saron. The right hand swings the bat while the left hand does a “patet” that is holding back the vibrations that occur on sheet metal. In beating slenthem, the instincts and feelings of the musician are more needed to create a good echo and hum. As in the C, D, E, G notation, the echo that is generated when beating the C note must be lost right when you hit the D note, and so on.

Within the port period, the method used is the same as if using balungan, ricik, or saron. But in certain circumstances such as demung imbal, then slenthem is played to fill the void between the balungan tones that are slow beaten by beating 2 times the beat of balungan. Or it can also be in the condition of slenthem to be beaten half a time there balungan because balungan is being beaten quickly, like when gendhing Gangsaran in the battle scene.

Gender

Gender is a metal or metallophone musical instrument and is a part of Javanese gamelan instruments as well as Bali. Gender has 10 to 14 pitched metal or brass blades that are hung on a file and above a resonator made of bamboo or zinc and tapped using a bladed round-shaped bat that is made of wood (Bali) or made of cloth (Javanese). Gender tones vary depending on the scales used. In complete Javanese gamelan there are 3 genders namely slendro, pelog pathet nem and five and pelog pathet goods. Gender forms resemble gangsa in Balinese gamelan and slenthem in Javanese gamelan.
